Build an apples-to-apples quote
Start with the exact same check-in, checkout, guest count, pet count, and property. Confirm that both offers include the same unit rather than a similarly named room, apartment, or collection listing.
Capture the quote at roughly the same time. Dynamic pricing and availability can change quickly, and currency conversion can make screenshots taken on different days misleading.

Read what is included
A direct operator may include parking, pool heat, late checkout, equipment, or local support that is sold separately elsewhere. An OTA promotion or loyalty credit can move the comparison in the other direction.
Treat a coupon as real only if it applies to your dates and survives checkout. Treat a refundable deposit as a cash-flow requirement and risk exposure, not necessarily a permanent cost.
Price transparency is improving
The U.S. FTC rule covering short-term lodging requires the most prominent displayed price to include mandatory fees, while allowing certain government charges and shipping charges to be handled separately under the rule’s conditions. The rule does not cap fees; it changes how covered sellers disclose them.
Vrbo says mandatory fees and its service fee are included in the upfront price shown in search and on listing pages, with taxes and optional extras treated separately. Airbnb likewise describes total price as the host’s nightly price plus host- or Airbnb-determined fees and applicable taxes.
Use a decision table
Write down final total, amount due now, cancellation deadline, refund amount after each deadline, deposit exposure, and support path. If a term is not written, do not assume it.
The best offer is the one with the best combination of price, flexibility, confidence, and fit—not necessarily the smallest number.
