What changes when the intermediary disappears

On an OTA, the marketplace standardizes discovery, listing pages, messaging, checkout, and parts of post-booking support. It also defines the service-fee structure and controls the account relationship. On a direct site, those jobs move to the property owner, manager, booking engine, and payment processor.

That shift can make the experience more personal and more flexible, but it also makes operator quality more visible. A professional direct site should clearly identify the business, show complete terms, use a secure payment flow, and provide a reachable support channel.

  • OTA strength: broad inventory, standardized interfaces, reviews, and platform-managed workflows.
  • Direct strength: operator access, property-specific knowledge, potential rate or policy flexibility, and a direct relationship.
  • Direct Stay Search’s role: discovery and verification of the public website—not booking, payment processing, or a guarantee.

Price: compare the whole trip

Platform fees can be material. Airbnb currently describes a split-fee model in which most hosts pay 3% while guests often pay 14.1%–16.5% of the booking subtotal, and a single-fee model in which most hosts pay 15.5%. Vrbo describes a traveler service fee and, for many pay-per-booking hosts, a 5% commission plus a 3% payment-processing fee.

Those published structures explain why a direct price can differ, but they do not prove that it will be lower. Operators may price channels differently, offer direct-only promotions, include different cancellation terms, or retain part of the avoided distribution cost.

Trust: replace the logo with evidence

A familiar marketplace logo is a useful trust shortcut. Direct booking requires a more deliberate check: confirm the property address or market, the operator’s legal or trading identity, secure checkout, written policies, and a realistic way to contact the operator.

Pay by a method that offers dispute rights. Avoid wire transfers, cryptocurrency, gift cards, and pressure to leave a marketplace for an already-open marketplace reservation. Independent discovery is different from an unknown person diverting an in-progress platform booking.

Which path is better?

Choose the OTA when standardized reviews, platform support, rewards, or a familiar cancellation flow are worth the platform economics to you. Choose direct when you have verified the operator, understand the terms, value direct communication, and the final offer is better for your trip.

The strongest traveler behavior is not loyalty to one channel. It is comparison. Find the property, inspect both paths when available, and make the decision from the final total and written terms.
